The Aloha Card Works!

Here’s a great story as told by Waynette Shindo from Mililani Missionary Church:

Waynette & Guy (Mililani Missionary)

One Wednesday morning a fellow co-worker at Kapolei Middle School left an Aloha Card on my desk. When I saw it, I was excited because our pastor had just informed us that a Training Workshop was being held at our church on Saturday to explain how the program worked. Our school was also considering implementing this program in the Advisory classes for character building.

Later that afternoon, I noticed a boy sitting outside of a classroom waiting for one of his teachers. After getting a closer look at him I realized that he was the same boy I observed for the past week, slamming the car door every morning after being dropped off at school and exchanging angry words with the adult who was dropping him off. My natural instinct was to avoid this kid whom I saw as being disrespectful. But, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me, telling me that I needed to extend hospitality to this boy. So, I invited him to wait inside of my classroom where it was air-conditioned. I also offered him some cookies and milk. I watched as he inhaled the cookies and milk as if he had not eaten for a week! Then I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me again to share the Aloha Card with this boy. My head and heart was in conflict because I didn’t know what to say and besides, I had not attended the Training Workshop to find out how this program worked yet.

I prayed silently to myself and asked the Holy Spirit to help me since it was a very awkward moment for both of us. Then, the words came and I found myself talking to him, asking questions like, “What is your favorite subject?” “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “If you had one wish, what would it be?” I learned so much about him in such a short time and found out that his dream in life was to own his own car shop. Then I picked up the Aloha Card and showed him the “Misery” side. I pointed out to him that if he continued to be disrespectful towards his teachers and parents now as a young man, that he would find himself making enemies as he grew older and eventually live a very lonely life. Realizing that he wasn’t quite comprehending what I was saying, I used his dream as an example and told him that if he owned his own car shop and didn’t respect his customers, that he would lose them and eventually lose his business. I also told him that when you marry someone and have children, if you disrespect your wife and children, your wife will leave you, your children will not want you in their life, and eventually, you will find yourself lonely and miserable.

After about an hour or so, his teacher returned to her classroom and he left. I went home wondering if I had done more damage than good. The one thing I knew for sure was that the Holy Spirit truly spoke to me and I simply obeyed.

The following day at work, as I returned to my classroom after recess, one of the teachers mentioned that a boy was looking for me and had left some flowers with her, asking if she could be sure to give them to me. A little note was attached to the flowers that said, “Thank you for caring.”

In my heart, I knew who had left the flowers.

*What led me to share this story was a question that was raised at the Saturday Training Workshop when a young lady asked Pastor Allen Cardines if there was a script or something written to tell us Christians what to say and how to share the Aloha Card. This experience reminded me of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and if we obey His leading, the Lord will take care of the rest!
